What the hell?! I go away on vacation for a few days and come home to find caution tape and an accident scene in front of my building. The building itself was fine - thank goodness - but the fire hydrant and one of the pylons installed to protect the building weren't so lucky. The steel pylon was hit first by the driver as (s)he came down the hill. It took a severe beating and is now bent at a 45 degree angle. Then, it looks like the car continued up, over the pylon, and into the hydrant because the sidewalk immediately around it looks like someone took a jackhammer and did some digging. There's even a tire skidmark on the sidewalk past both of those! My downstairs neighbor left a voice message for me, but I've yet to hear the story. I'm just glad I didn't come back and find the utility pole leaning on the building or completely knocked over. For all I know this could've happened 3 days ago or just this morning.
After all the other times something similar happened or has come close to it, I think it's time for the city to consider putting in a speedbump. I have no idea how to begin petitioning for that, but I think there's enough evidence to show we need one at this corner.
